Project Goals

The automotive industry is changing. New technologies, broader vehicle spectra and numerous variants with smaller quantities require high planning effort. The use of a multitude of non-linked systems makes the planning process time-consuming and laborious. The dpa - the digital planning assistant developed by SABO with the Audi AG - is a user-friendly application that maps the core process of assembly line planning with a future-oriented, service-friendly and web-based technology.

Solution

A large number of systems that have not yet been linked are now digitally mapped.  The interdisciplinary project team consisting of assembly planners, usability specialists, UI designers, developers, and testers, uses Agile Scrum methodology, coordinates in different rhythms, and plans all stages together. These sprints end with a directly usable version of the dpa. All information relevant to the core assembly process is quickly and easily visualized on an intuitive and future-proof interface:

  • The user interface of the SPA (single-page application) uses a modern toolchain for web development (TypeScript, React and MobX). 
  • The application connects to a business logic server via REST API. 
  • The server is programmed in Microsoft® .NET Core, the database can be any MySQL compatible product. 
  • Two different deployment environments are used: a suite of docker containers and Cloud Foundry runtime environment installed on AWS VPC (Amazon Web Services Virtual Private Cloud).

Results

The dpa centralizes large amounts of data from various systems and enables digital collaboration.  Competences and know-how of the planner community are bundled.  This puts decisions on a common basis. Efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity are increased; complexity is minimized. The effect: enormous time savings and cost reduction through sustainable, detailed, transparent, and comparative planning. The dpa is a valuable contribution to the creation of a future-oriented working environment at Audi.

  • Within just a few seconds, all information relevant to assembly planners is available - regardless of the device or location. 
  • The creation of any number of plan variants helps to simulate solution approaches and their effects in production very quickly.  
  • The application displays the layout of the production hall with all objects and spatial restrictions. 
  • All information on the current status of the individual workstations is at hand, supplemented with information regarding the production cycle. 
  • The degree of utilization of the employees, the control of the work processes in the assembly, and the allocation and outlines of the production area, as well as the space requirements of changing components, are all part of the digitized planning.
  • The user guidance ensures that all necessary information is provided, preconditions for the respective task are fulfilled and all activities resulting from the planning are transferred to checklists. 
  • The pre-defined workflow ensures complete processing of the planning tasks. 
  • For quick orientation and focusing, important layout information is graphically highlighted in the current planning to ensure concentration on key elements. 
  • Layers in the layout can be switched on and off for an optimal overview. 
  • The work processes, materials and resources can be moved between workstations very easily and intuitively.  Assembly planners receive direct feedback on the effects. 
  • The UI design of our partner CaderaDesign creates a maximum of readability, order, and overview despite highly complex connections and large amounts of information. 
  • All planning information relevant to the core process of assembly planning is made available to other systems via interfaces. 
  • For the dpa, a concept is available for planning logistics processes in production, including picking and just-in-time delivery to the assembly line.
