Project Goals

Kirsch is a global manufacturer of medical refrigerators and freezers. Customers include pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, blood banks, as well as chemical and pharmaceutical companies. With extensive experience since 1865, Kirsch sets standards in innovation, functionality and efficiency.

The products were supplied with a Windows-based application for data collection. This legacy application used LAN and the devices had to be connected accordingly.

In collaboration with Grossenbacher Systeme AG, this solution was to be replaced by an IoT edge device and a cloud-hosted application to extend the existing data collection functionality through active monitoring and easier support.

Challenges

One of the requirements was to provide over-the-air firmware updates for the edge devices. The solution produced by SABO enables firmware configurations to be set and new firmware updates to be transferred to selected groups of devices via the Internet and the process to be monitored.

The refrigerators manufactured by Kirsch are Category C medical devices in accordance with EN 62304. The challenge was to balance our proven agile development approach with compliance to the required documentation and the overall responsibility to provide a highly reliable system with redundancy for secure data storage.

According to existing legal requirements, the refrigeration of medicines and blood preparations must be verifiable for many years. It must not be possible to manipulate the temperature history logs.

This is why Philipp Kirsch GmbH decided to develop the Kirsch Evolution Cloud and entrusted SABO Mobile IT GmbH with the requirements analysis, product design and software production.

It soon became apparent that the technical and organizational challenges of the project, which involved four parties, were not easy, but SABO succeeded in establishing clear and reliable project management with the software. Result

The Kirsch Evolution Cloud ensures continuous monitoring of the devices, notifies users in the event of problems, saves relevant data in an easily readable form with export options and thus ensures data backup and proof. The temperature is monitored from anywhere, via smartphone, PC or tablet.see data from devices for which they are responsible.
